To ensure consistent, wholesome pork products, the live production systems are closely aligned with strict control over the entire production process, including genetics, nutrition and animal welfare.

Seaboard Foods' farm operations supply animals to the Guymon, Okla., processing plant. The producer-owners of the St. Joseph, Mo., plant supply the animals to the St. Joseph processing plant.

2,210 employees raise more than 7.1 million market pigs a year.

The pigs are raised on farms specialized for the pigs’ stage in life, such as sow farms, nursery farms and finisher operations.

The sow barns have specialized functions including breeding, gestation, farrowing and administrative functions. The barns are linked to a computer network for round-the-clock monitoring of building security and environment.

340,000 sows are 100% artificially inseminated and then their pregnancy is carefully checked using ultrasound technology.

From the breeding barn, they are then moved to the gestation barn, where they are given individual care and a special diet.

The sows will be moved to the farrowing barn, where they will give birth to 10-12 piglets. They will nurse the piglets for about three weeks and then are returned to the breeding barn.

Each year, a sow averages birth to more than 25 weaned pigs.

12-pound piglets are moved to a nursery barn from the sow farm.

They will stay in the nursery barn for seven weeks, where they will weigh about 45 pounds.

Then the pigs will move to a finishing site, where they will grow until they reach market weight.

The finishing farm has several barns and is closely monitored by a farm manger. This farm manger is responsible for monitoring animal care, animal health and equipment.

There are also additional crews that are trained specially for animal moving, that assist with unloading, load out, health care and sanitation of each barn.
